The soil and your health

Updated: Nov 5, 2020

We were blessed with an abundant crop this year at Penny's Acres, both from our high tunnel ("greenhouse") and our outdoor garden plot. Lots of delectable lettuce, kale, beets, asparagus, squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, and so on. We love it when we have plenty to share, and we did. We were pretty amazed at the bumper crop at first, but then realized that we paid more attention to our soil this year. Our crops were planted in rich tilth that we took our time cultivating.

What is tilth, you may be asking? Tilth is the term we use to describe the condition of tilled soil in terms of its suitability for growing plants. This year, we paid a lot of attention to the tilth of our soil, and invested our time and effort into it. That time, effort, and love paid off in a bountiful harvest!

So let me ask... how's your tilth (health)? Have you been paying attention? Cultivating? Have you invested your time, effort, and love into your own tilth?

The World Health Organization defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." To achieve this state, we need to invest our time, effort, and love into our own physical, mental, social, and I will add spiritual, well being. So often, though, we fail to make this investment on a regular basis. Why is that?

No, really. Consider for yourself why you are failing to invest regularly in your health. And then make a commitment to yourself to invest! YOU are worth the investment!!

Here's to your tilth!
